Calling the government public health workforce “the backbone of a healthy community,” de Beaumont President and CEO Brian C. Castrucci, DrPH, reviewed trends in state and local health departments at a workshop titled “Dialogue About the Workforce for Population Health Improvement” on March 21. Sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the event brought together leaders in public health, healthcare, philanthropy, and education to discuss the role of professionals including community health workers, health navigators, and chronic disease educators.

Citing findings of the 2017 PH WINS survey — which show a concerning rate of turnover in health departments — Castrucci said, “These data are a call to action. We’ve got to do something about it. We’re going to have to pay a bill if we don’t do something sooner than later.” View Castrucci’s 15-minute presentation below, and see the full agenda and more videos on the National Academies website.
