Public health professionals are skilled in their areas of expertise, but most have had little or no formal training in communications. And while many do not view their primary role as communications, public health professionals across specialties communicate with members of the public, policymakers, government agencies, and other multi-sector partners in their day-to-day work.
The Talking Health training, based on de Beaumont’s bestselling book Talking Health: A New Way to Communicate About Public Health, helps public health professionals boost their communications skills through practical, tangible, and immediately actionable lessons based on their real-life situations and challenges.
On-Demand Training
Launched in late 2026, the free, self-paced Talking Health On-Demand training was designed by and for public health professionals. Approximately six hours in length, it is composed of five interactive modules:
- Introduction and the state of public health communications, including what it means for communications to be effective
- Messaging strategy and research-based best practices
- Defining the audience and tailoring communications to them
- Public health storytelling, incorporating data and community values
- Message testing and capstone project
In-Person Training
In addition to the on-demand training, in-person trainings are also available to be co-hosted with an interested organization, such as a local or state health department or a nonprofit partner organization.
In-person trainings typically run for one or two full days and include modules on:
- Making the case for public health
- Communicating about public health, based on the latest research
- Storytelling and messaging, including data storytelling
Note: In-person trainings are offered for a fee, and de Beaumont is happy to work with organizations that are interested in co-hosting a training but may not have the resources to cover the full cost.
