Research Associate

The Research Associate will be an active member of the Foundation’s Research, Evaluation and Learning (REL) team. This small team designs and manages most of the Foundation’s research studies, such as the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) and Staffing Up, and evaluations of our other programmatic initiatives, such as CityHealth and Public Health Reaching Across Sectors (PHRASES). The team also works to help infuse a learning agenda into the Foundation’s work. You will primarily work on our expanding portfolio of evaluation activities and will also contribute to PH WINS and other research studies as needed.


Your responsibilities will vary and require you to prioritize effectively, act quickly, and maintain confidentiality. The primary role of the position will be to support Foundation-wide evaluation, strategic planning, and learning activities. You will support the Senior Research and Evaluation Officer in the design, planning, and implementation of evaluation projects. In addition, you will provide support to the PH WINS team, with an emphasis on data analysis and project management. You will have substantial opportunities to publish findings in peer-reviewed literature.

Your day-to-day work will include activities like:

  • Support the REL Team in planning and managing a portfolio of charitable projects—monitoring, reviewing submissions, and tracking performance of both grants and contracts.
  • Work with the Senior Research, Evaluation and Learning Officer to design and manage the Foundation’s program evaluation efforts.
    • Assess progress toward specific grantee goals and outcomes and progress toward the Foundation’s goals.
    • Work with grantees and partners, as necessary, to formulate logic models, define target outcomes, and assess progress toward stated goals and objectives.
    • Use process and outcome data to support continued funding and evaluate the effectiveness of the Foundation’s grantmaking.
    • Provide project management support
  • Participate in editorial reviews of research and evaluation products
  • Support PH WINS
    • Conduct data analysis using STATA and interpret findings
    • Draft reports and manuscripts for publication
    • Perform literature reviews
    • Perform general administrative and stakeholder management activities, as needed
  • Present findings clearly and succinctly, both orally and in writing
  • Take on other roles and special projects as needed to support the REL team and enhance the work of the Foundation

  • Completion of an advanced degree (e.g., MA, MPH) and two years of relevant experience. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the education requirements
  • Knowledge of public health workforce is a plus
  • Depth and breadth of knowledge of evaluation as represented by responsibility for design and implementation of a broad range of applied evaluation tools, methodologies, and techniques.  Experience with research design and qualitative techniques such as focus groups, interviews, case studies, and rigorous qualitative analysis
  • Experience or interest in contributing to survey research studies
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including ability to convey technical concepts to a non-technical audience and to provide excellent customer service
  • Analytical skills, including research and statistical methods. Demonstrated skills in data collection, management, analysis, and reporting
  • Experience using STATA required
  • Experience with data visualization
  • Strong project management skills. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to move quickly from one task to another, prioritizing requests and managing timelines
  • Excellent conceptual, analytic and forward-thinking skills
  • Foundation or nonprofit experience preferred, passion for our mission is required


This position is full-time and based in downtown Bethesda, MD, just outside of Washington, D.C. Our strong preference is for this position to work in person at the office 1—2 days a week, however fully remote candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Limited travel is required and is typically known well in advance.

We offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a collegial work environment. The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience.
